SteelSeries is a name synonymous with quality products in the gaming world, in fact I have one of their mouse pads sitting on my desk as I write this, and they were kind enough to let me have a play with one of their latest creations, the Flux headset.

The headset is an on-ear headset, differing from their popular Siberia series which were all over-ear headsets.  I tend to prefer the over-ear style usually, but I have to admit, these are very comfortable.  They sit well, without putting too much pressure on your ears, and they also seem to do a very good job of blocking out external noise, which is particularly important if you’re using them while out and about.

They are described as being a headset for PC/Mac or for mobile use, and are capable of folding away for ease of transport, although you’d need some pretty big pockets to carry these around.  Having said that, I think they’ve got the balance of size vs. practicality just about right.  The headset is big enough to be comfortable and provide that immersive experience that only larger headphones can, but at the same time they aren’t so bulky that it’s impractical to wear them while away from your home.

The Flux headset comes in black and white varieties, but just about every individual part of the headset is replaceable, and if you order from the SteelSeries website you will be able to customize the look to your personal preference.  It is a very no frills design, and this definitely works in its favor with the overall appearance of the product being simple but stylish.

The headset also comes with two separate cables with 3.5mm jacks, depending on what you’re using them for.  The PC/Mac cable comes with separate microphone and audio jacks, whereas the mobile lead plugs straight into your device.  Both leads have an inbuilt microphone located close to the headset, and while this is unobtrusive and suits the streamlined appearance of the product, it can be slightly irritating if the cable rotates, muffling the microphone.  My main criticism however, would be the length of the PC/Mac cable.  I can understand a smaller cable for mobile device use, you certainly don’t want to be carrying around a 2m cable, but the PC/Mac lead is equally short.  I actually had to reposition by PC closer to where I was sitting in order for the cable to reach.
